A talk by Frances Reed (Garden Museum)

Implementing sustainability in various ways:

  • Social Sustainability:

    • As a museum, it’s our job!

    • Staff/Volunteer visits

    • Maintaining links with local businesses

    • Neighbours scheme

    • Flower Cart

  • Environmental Sustainability:

    • Materials from past exhibitions used in the offices

    • Café food from local supplier in Vauxhall

    • Old Vic theatre set recycled for café counter

    • Greenhouse with compost bins

    • Eco sessions with local schools, educational workshops

    • Domestic heater used in temporary exhibition space

    • Plan to grow edibles in garden

  • Cultivating Style/Sustainable Exhibitions:

    • Organic material: cutting technique through geometry which leaves no waste

    • Organic Paint: Eg The Colour Makes People Happy

    • Fit to purpose display/ FSC Certified wood

    • Minimal electrical consumption

    • Workshops on natural dyes

Discussion:

  • Remakery, Brixton: community run organisation that re-use collected materials

  • Julie’s Bicycle: sustaining creativity

  • Sending unwanted materials to production companies or giving them to gallery Shop, who can use them as props (as done in the National Maritime Museum)
